This campaign is designed to raise awareness of how human rights—including sexual and reproductive rights — have been under attack in Muslim societies. Rising conservatism, fueled by militarism, increasing inequalities, the politicization of religion and Islamophobia have strengthened patriarchal and extremist religious ideologies. Saudi Princess Launches 'My Guardian Knows What's Best For Me' Campaign
Recently, Saudi women activists, led by Saudi Princess Jawaher bint Jalawi, launched a campaign called "My Guardian Knows What's Best For Me," calling for redefining the term "guardian" (Mahram) and for opposing calls by those with liberal views to improve the status of women in Saudi Arabia. Princess Jawaher's campaign is a response to the struggle launched in July 2009 by Saudi women's rights activist Wajeha Al-Huweidar calling for abolishing the mahram ("guardian") law, which requires women to obtain the approval of a male relative for nearly any move they make in their lives. … and Saudi Women Launch "Black Ribbons Campaign" for Rights in Saudi Arabia
On November 6, 1990, 40 brave Saudi women drove their cars publicly in the capitol of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, to demand their right to drive. They were subsequently detained; their passports were confiscated, and fired from their jobs. On the 19th anniversary of this event, Saudi women’s activists, led by Wajeha al Huwaider, are launching the “Black Ribbons Campaign”. To know more about this campaign, please follow this link:

World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse in Lebanon
On the occasion of the World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse 2009, the Higher Council for Childhood-the Ministry of Social Affairs, in partnership with KAFA (enough) Violence &Exploitation, UNICEF, World Vision, Save the Children Sweden, War Child Holland, AFEL, Nabaa Association, Amel Organization, Sustainable Democratic Center, SASCD, Lebanese Union of Child Care, Dar El Amal, launched a nation-wide campaign designed to increase awareness on child abuse and on the preventive measures needed to impede exploitation. Khaled, now 21, is born to a Lebanese mother and a Palestinian father registered in Syria. He spent all of his life with his mother in Lebanon. At his coming of age, Khaled turns into a persona non grata in his mother’s homeland. He has not committed, has not violated public order and has not even earned a traffic ticket! Khaled can only remain in Lebanon if he vouches not to work, a matter which is hardly feasible since almost anybody needs to earn a living. Journalists and reporters from international media often remark with admiration and awe that women in Lebanon are the most emancipated in the Arab region. This may hold true for the handful of fashionistas who enjoy the douceur de vivre of Lebanon’s famous restaurants, terraces and nightlife in downtown Beirut.
Beyond this rather tiny and over-privileged surface area, the less fortunate of the Lebanese women have to deal with the constraints of what is probably the most patriarchal of Arab societies. "Underground" Shelters Help Women Escape Abuse in Iraq
On a bullet-scarred side street in Baghdad’s downtown, where the statue of Saddam Hussein was torn down in April of 2003, an inconspicuous entryway tucked between a steel-shuttered shop and a rickety candy stall leads to a flight of steep concrete stairs. Rusted water pipes run precariously over and across the poorly lit top step, tripping first-time visitors. The second-floor landing bottlenecks into a dark, empty hallway. Women Lawyers Will Be Able to Represent Women Clients in Saudi Arabia
Justice Minister Muhammad Al-Eisa said the Kingdom’s efforts to revamp the judicial system were well under way and that women would eventually be allowed to practice as lawyers representing women clients. Women's Fight for Equality, Rights in Iran
The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a joint programme of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), requests urgent intervention in the following situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Observatory has been informed by reliable sources, including the Iranian League for the Defence of Human Rights, of summons to appear in court issued against women human rights defenders and active members of the “One Million Signatures” Campaign. According to the information received, over the past weeks, a number of Campaign activists have received phone calls to appear in the Third Security Branch of the Revolutionary Courts. Vulnerable Women without Support as Widows, Orphans in Iraq
Wedad can't bear to live this way much longer. Disgusted by the work, she can hardly stand it. Wedad is a prostitute in Iraq. Sectarian violence claimed the life of her husband three years ago. Unable to rely on her family, Wedad tried getting a job to support her three young daughters, but found the men interviewing her didn't want her for her work skills, only her body.

Concern over Lebanon maid deaths
A human rights group wants the Lebanese government to investigate the deaths of eight foreign maids last month (October), six of whom fell or jumped from high places.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) said four of the deaths were classified as suicides by the police, three as possible work accidents and one as a heart attack.
Officials had to explain why there was such a high death rate among Lebanon's 200,000 domestic workers, it said.

Hijab, chador, burqa or niqab? The veiling of Muslim women continues to provoke controversy. This time it is the niqab, or face veil, at the center of the conflict-charged fundamental debate.
The bone of contention is none less than the Grand Imam of Cairo University and the Al-Azhar Mosque.
