Job position: Trade and Development Program Officer

The person to be hired will work within ANND program on Trade, Development, and Human Rights Program area.

ANND is a regional network working on social and economic policies and rights in the Arab region. The position is located at ANND executive secretariat office in Beirut. (website: www.annd.org )

Brief about ANND’s work on trade issues:
ANND believes that trade can be one of many tools for development; accordingly it should be looked upon as means for achieving sustainable development and not as an end by itself. Trade policies should be an integral part of national development plans.

Objectives of ANND’s work in the area of trade, development & human rights for the year 2009-2012:

1. To enhance and strengthen the role of civil society organizations in the Arab region in human-rights based advocacy on trade policy-making
2. To clarify and strengthen channels of influence for civil society organizations in the Arab region in trade and economic policy-making processes, on the national, regional and global levels
3. To increase and promote indigenous resource material availability in the Arab region, specifically among the civil society communities

Responsibilities:
The person to fill this position will be responsible of:

• Supporting the overall implementation of the Trade and Development program activities
• Undertaking policy analysis of the implications of specific trade agreements on the Arab region as a whole or on specific Arab countries or sectors
• Monitoring specific progress of negotiations on agreements identified as priority for the work on ANND
• Help bring together a special newsletter on trade and development issues
• Help develop further programmatic plans for ANND in the area of trade, development, and human rights interlinks
• Keeping ANND members informed of progress on the work of ANND in the area of trade
• Keeping ANND website updated with news and materials about trade issues

Qualifications:

• Masters degree in areas related to development economics, international trade and finance, development studies, global governance
• Solid knowledge of issues pertaining to trade and development, mechanisms and agreements of the World Trade Organization, Euro-Mediterranean Association Agreements, bilateral free trade agreements, global governance issues, social and economic rights
• Familiarity with civil society campaigns on trade issues and general policy stands on trade and development issues
• Previous experience with civil society organizations working on advocacy and lobbying
• Proficiency in English and Arabic
• Commitments to values of rights, justice, and sustainable development
